Related query results refinements
Sometimes we fetch results for queries that are similar to the actual search you type. This change makes it less likely that these results will rank highly if the original query had a rare word that was dropped in the alternate query. For example, if you are searching for [rare red widgets], you might not be as interested in a page that only mentions “red widgets.”
More comprehensive indexing
This change makes more long-tail documents available in our index, so they are more likely to rank for relevant queries.
New “parked domain” classifier
This is a new algorithm for automatically detecting parked domains. Parked domains are placeholder sites that are seldom useful and often filled with ads. They typically don’t have valuable content for our users, so in most cases we prefer not to show them.
More autocomplete predictions
With autocomplete, we try to strike a balance between coming up with flexible predictions and remaining true to your intentions. This change makes our prediction algorithm a little more flexible for certain queries, without losing your original intention.
Fresher and more complete blog search results
We made a change to our blog search index to get coverage that is both fresher and more comprehensive.
We added new signals to help us make better predictions about which of two similar web pages is the original one.
Live results for Major League Soccer and the Canadian Football League
This change displays the latest scores & schedules from these leagues along with quick access to game recaps and box scores

Google+ will allow multiple admins to manage a brand page “before 2012,” Kristoffer Sorensen, a Google marketing strategist, said on in a live Q&A on Wednesday.
Currently, brand pages are tied to one admin account that has total control over the page and profile. This has been a point of frustration for social media managers who have multiple team members updating their company social profiles.

Under the new update, a person searching “Olympics” will be given results for the Olympics that are right around the corner, not those from 50 years ago. While all businesses need to be aware of the effect of “fresh” results on small business search engine optimization, it would appear that businesses dealing with rapidly changing technology would be the most affected by the change. Big businesses have more financial leverage and staff to be able to get content out in the front pages of search results. After announcing that Google+ has more than 40 million users, Google decided to shut down Google Buzz.
In a blog post, Google Vice President Bradley Horowitz, one of the Google+ leaders, said the company plans to close down Buzz “in a few weeks.” He noted that Buzz users will be able to view the posts created on Buzz in their Google Profile, and download them using Google Takeout.
“Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past,” Horowitz wrote. “We learned a lot from products like Buzz and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome.”
Google Buzz launched in February 2010 and got off to a rocky start, with users raising concerns over privacy issues. Initially, it was difficult to make the list of a user’s followers private. Those concerns led the Federal Trade Commission to press Google to agree to a “comprehensive privacy program” this past March. Privacy issues were only one problem Buzz had.
On Horowitz’s Google+ account, he went into more detail about the decision to kill Buzz. “We think the time has come for us to focus our energy on projects that will have the most impact to the most users,” Horowitz wrote. “With the majority of Buzz users now here on Google+, it became obvious that all of our attention should be focused on this community.”
Since iOS 5 was released, a number of additional apps in the App Store have been released with native support for Twitter.
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo shared some interesting stats about Twitter’s growth, including that it has more than 100 million active users and that signups via iOS device have tripled since the launch of iOS 5. For social media fans, the tight integration between iOS 5 and Twitter is one of the best reasons to upgrade.
Twitter has been on a roll in recent months. The company surpassed 200 million tweets per day in June but has since jumped to nearly 250 million daily tweets. The growth has been tremendous: Twitter had around 100 million tweets per day in January 2011.
Of those 100 million global active users, half of them log in daily. Costolo revealed, “We had 30% of our monthly active users login in every day at the beginning of the year. Now it’s over 50%.”
Apple’s mobile OS directly integrates Twitter, and that has resulted in a boost for the company. Costolo revealed that Twitter signups via iOS 5 devices have tripled since the launch of that iOS update.
